lost my buddy Toothless Bill yesterday after a very unfortunate turn of events in the vet’s office. it is shocking and sad but when you have a sick senior cat that’s how it goes sometimes.

I’m devastated but so grateful for my time with that guy. To come inside & learn to be comfortable in a home with people, at the big age of 8, requires a level of bravery that it is hard to fully grasp if you didn’t see it happen. That cat’s life was massive and I’m proud to have been part of it. Not many cats have a legacy but this grizzled old man definitely does. by @janderspecht

✨ in 2025 i:
- started a business
- pivoted that business
- learned a staggering amount of new things
- invented & ran a fundraiser that brought people together, raised $16K
- did ~2 events per week with my beautiful BHS boys, so much work that we are extremely proud of
- finished a first draft of a first novel that made me a stronger writer
- started a second novel to avoid revising my first novel
- lost my best buddy
- worked so hard that i broke myself a tiny bit but i am so proud of it all

Julia circa 12/31/24 planned none of this and didn’t see it coming. surprise bitch! you’re a cat therapist now!

in 2026, i plan to continue being delusional, because i have learned that nurturing a little seed of delusion is crucial to accomplishing anything scary. i wish the same for you! happy New Year! by @janderspecht

said goodbye to the best girl to ever do it today. 💕 we were together for 14 years and every minute was a blessing.

thank you to @paws.at.peace for shepherding her out of the world so peacefully, and to @ellentattoos for giving me a great tattoo to remember her by. by @janderspecht

Attention, New York creatures! This Thursday, @cronebro and @what.the.horror team up with @janderspecht of the Brooklyn Horror Society to discuss some of our favorite topics: feral children, merciless nature, writing books that get steadily more relevant as All This continues, and the gross and glorious things horror can do. @unnameablebooks will have copies of NECROLOGY and ROOT ROT, in case yours crawled away and left little trails of dirt behind. by @janderspecht

happy spring from me & @brooklynhorrorsociety ✨💕🌷

Saw-A-Thon gets a grid post! 🪚✨

back in mid-January, when Saw-A-Thon was still a joke, i mentioned it to a friend, and he was horrified. “is that…ethically wrong?” he said, “those movies are so terrible.”

he’s right, they’re terrible. they’re maybe the worst the genre has to offer. they are 20% traps and 80% the worst cop procedural dialogue you’ve ever seen. but terrible things have a tendency to bring out the best in people, and Saw certainly did this weekend.

the sublime brings people together, and the sublime lives in outrageous media, and when everything hits correctly, it can be so special. listening to a room full of (mostly women) scream and laugh and yell “KISS” at Adam & Laurence Gordon is now a core memory for me. i am so proud of the @brooklynhorrorsociety boys for making such an amazing event - Dave & Adam & Matt all worked so hard and helped create a space that could foster all that joy & generosity. and @lucky13saloon provided the perfect backdrop & support.

our stretch goal was to raise $5K for @chips4thave, so to raise over $16,000 in pledges is astonishing. my time organizing in the horror community has taught me that horror people are exceptionally kind & pro-social, and this is a shining example. all the participants who busted their butts to fundraise are heroes, and they did such incredible work.

i am now on Big Event Probation and i am not allowed to plan something like this again for a little while but don’t worry, we’ll be back with something even bigger and stupider before you know it. ✨🪚 by @janderspecht
