Wát een ervaring. Ontzettend van genoten. Mijn doel was 4h15. Ik heb mijzelf echt gigantisch verbaasd vandaag, en dat is echt een heerlijk gevoel!! 🤯

Na 26km heb ik een versnelling geplaatst. Tot 40,5km ging dat echt fantastisch. Helaas kon ik het net niet volhouden aan het einde. En dit smaakt zeker naar meer!!! Volgende keer sub 4h?

40 YEARS. 14 EIGHT-THOUSANDERS.

Forty years ago today, on 16 October 1986, Hans Kammerlander and I stood on the summit of Lhotse. With that, I had climbed all fourteen eight-thousanders, without bottled oxygen. I was the first. People were celebrating a victory. I had never entered a race.

I am not a competitive person. Let sport have its winners and losers. For me, alpinism is not a sport. It is a way of confronting the unknown, with no guarantee of coming back.

My life was different then. I was much freer. I could devote almost everything to the mountains, make my own decisions and live with the consequences. I had family, of course, but my life did not yet have the responsibilities and priorities it would acquire later.

I understand the fascination with being first. Peter Habeler and I were the first to climb Everest without supplementary oxygen. Then came all fourteen eight-thousanders. I never climbed for records, but I know what these firsts mean to people. And today, after seeing how much goodwill I receive here, I have learned to accept that as a great compliment. Thank you.

But there is something I have learned about success. Everyone wants to celebrate you at the top. Few people are interested when you’re down. Nobody wants to carry the frostbite, the pain, the losses, the endless attempts or the risks. They want the photograph on the summit. They don’t want to pay the price for getting there.

Forty years on, much of it has begun to blur. I don’t mind. I am not made for looking back. I never was. When an expedition was over, I moved on. The same with other chapters of my life. Not because I am particularly disciplined. It is simply my nature.

The past is over. The future is not written. Life is happening now.

So thank you to those who read my books, come to my talks and share their thoughts with me. You have given me a great deal.

And a special thank-you to my haters. You’ve worked remarkably hard to keep my story alive. Not quite what you intended, I imagine.

Unggahan Instagram Story akun istri Gubernur Kalimantan Timur menjadi sorotan di tengah ramainya pembicaraan mengenai karhutla di Kalimantan. Dari tangkapan layar yang beredar, akun tersebut terlihat membagikan sederet konten bernada motivasi dan refleksi, mulai dari pesan untuk tidak iri dengan kehidupan perempuan lain, kutipan soal ibadah dan kemarahan, hingga kalimat seperti “Work hard. Dress good. Avoid drama. Eat well. Talk less. Chase goals. Stay humble.” Ada pula unggahan bertuliskan “Alhamdulillah”, ajakan bersyukur, hingga pesan “Every rumor needs a crowd. Truth needs only time.”

Rangkaian Story itu kemudian diperbincangkan karena dinilai sebagian netizen memperlihatkan sikap yang terlalu santai atau nonchalant ketika masyarakat di sejumlah wilayah Kalimantan masih menghadapi asap karhutla. Namun, unggahan tersebut sendiri tidak secara eksplisit membahas karhutla maupun menyatakan sikap terhadap kondisi kebakaran. Sorotan publik lebih banyak muncul dari kontras antara konten-konten positif yang dibagikan dengan situasi lingkungan yang sedang menjadi perhatian, sehingga persepsi bahwa unggahan itu “tidak peka” tetap merupakan penilaian warganet.
