The noodles were different, but this time her reaction was too. Hannah ordered ramen at a new restaurant, expecting the curly noodles she’s familiar with. When it came out they were straight noodles that looked like spaghetti. Not long ago that difference would have been enough for her not to eat it, but this time she acknowledged that it looked different, pointed out the differences, and worked through her discomfort to try it. I can’t tell you how many times she’s ordered something familiar with every intention of eating it, only for an unexpected difference to make it feel wrong. A different noodle shape or a different color broth might seem insignificant to someone else, but for her it would mean going without the meal entirely. This is why “I’m sure you can find something she can eat on the menu” isn’t always that simple with ARFID. Finding something familiar on the menu doesn’t mean it will arrive looking or feeling familiar to her. It’s also why “she’ll eat when she’s hungry” is so frustrating to hear. We’ve watched her skip countless meals even when she was hungry because the food in front of her didn’t feel safe. This time she noticed the differences, talked through what felt uncomfortable, and still gave it a try. Not every meal will look like this, but moments like these show how far she’s come and that’s what matters. @michelledorit @silverlakeramen #ramen #arfid #anxiety #autism

A follower recently asked me a rather interesting question, and I felt it deserved a public reply. Not just because it made me think, but because I wondered if the answer might resonate with someone else, too. Why do I read about complicated relationships, infidelity and broken marriages, a subject that once hurt us must mean reopening old wounds? Human relationships are incredibly complex, and I read about all kinds of human experiences because I’m curious about people and what makes them who they are. Books allow us to explore these experiences from a safe distance and sometimes understand ourselves a little better, too. I also don’t believe healing means avoiding everything that reminds us of what we’ve been through. For me, reading about difficult experiences offers perspective. Sometimes, it means reaching a place where we can look at something that once hurt us without allowing it to define us or take us back to that place. Not every story that reminds us of pain has to reopen a wound. Sometimes, it simply reminds us of how much we’ve grown. 🤍
