I am a HUGE fan of Douglas Adams. My blog is called 'Beast of Traal', after a character from his science fiction novel, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. My music blog's name, 'Milliblog' too is a riff of Milliways, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, from the same novel.
Another one of my pet projects is called 'No Word Yet' (https://tinyurl.com/nowordyet2), a reverse version of what Douglas Adams attempted in his 'The Meaning of Liff'.
Beyond sci-fi and humor, Douglas Adams was a voracious consumer and thinker of technology, and has had a huge impact on many things we take for granted today. One such fictional invention he created in the novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the 'Babel Fish' (named after the Tower of Babel).
Instead of explaining what a Babel Fish is or does, let me share an excerpt from the 2005 movie version of the book. Watch that, and then watch the two inventions that have brought this fictional concept to life, first by Google in 2017, and now, in 2025, by Apple!
