Imam Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Bukhari (810–870) was a renowned Sunni Muslim hadith scholar, theologian and jurist, best known for compiling Sahih al-Bukhari, widely regarded by Sunni Muslims as the most authoritative collection of hadith after the Qur'an. Born in Bukhara in Transoxiana, in present-day Uzbekistan, he travelled extensively throughout the Islamic world, studying under numerous scholars and collecting traditions attributed to the Prophet Muhammad. His Sahih was compiled according to stringent criteria concerning the reliability of narrators and the continuity of chains of transmission. Among his other works are Al-Adab al-Mufrad, a collection of traditions on ethics and manners, and Al-Tarikh al-Kabir, a biographical work on hadith narrators. Al-Bukhari also became involved in theological controversies, particularly concerning the relationship between faith and deeds and the question of the createdness of the Qur'an. His dispute with Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Dhuhli in Nishapur contributed to his departure from the city. He spent his final years near Samarkand, where he died in 870. His scholarship profoundly influenced Sunni hadith studies, Islamic jurisprudence and subsequent generations of Muslim scholars
