The woman in this painting is Neith, one of ancient Egypt’s oldest known goddesses. Her name has been interpreted as “the terrifying one.”

She was associated with weaving, warfare and protection. In one later creation story, she brings the world into being through the power of thought and speech.

There is something powerful in that union: the quiet, invisible force of imagination giving shape to the world, and the fierce strength that rises to defend it. Perhaps “terrifying” feels different when you imagine her beside you—her hands creating, her presence guarding, and her power standing between you and danger 🧚🏽🤺
