There are chapters of history that classrooms barely mention, and that silence is often deliberate.
Consider the Congo. Under King Leopold II of Belgium, an estimated ten million Congolese people were killed through forced labor, starvation, disease, mutilation, and systematic terror genocide fueled by the ruthless pursuit of rubber and ivory that enriched Europeans while devastating Africa. The so-called “Congo Free State” was one of the deadliest colonial regimes ever.
If unfamiliar, read King Leopold’s Ghost. It’s a vital work exposing the Congo Holocaust, a brutal history too often denied and erased. Understanding the true scope of these atrocities reveals how today’s global inequalities are legacies of calculated violence, not accidental outcomes.
For people of African descent worldwide, this is more than just African history it is shared history. It stands as a reminder of the consequences of silence, the destruction caused by greed, and above all, the incredible resilience of Congolese communities who survived one of humanity’s darkest chapters.
📖 Learn it. Share it. Speak it. The stories they try to bury are the ones we must preserve.

Historically accurate estimates show that Hitler’s regime was responsible for the deaths of around six million Jews in the Holocaust, along with millions more—including Poles, Soviet civilians, Roma, disabled people, and others. Leopold II of Belgium’s rule in the Congo Free State led to the deaths of roughly ten million Congolese people through forced labor, violence, starvation, and disease. Both events remain among the deadliest atrocities in modern history, each with overwhelming documentary, testimonial, and forensic evidence confirming the scale of suffering and loss.

🧃 writes the narrative. Mao, Stalin and Leoplod have killed more people than Hitler but you don’t learn their names in history class. Sure Stalin but it’s only about him leading communism after Lenin.
