Between 1870 and 1940, an estimated 35,000 indigenous people from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania were put on show in human zoos in cities like Paris, Hamburg, London, and New York. The last documented one in Europe took place in Belgium as late as 1958. These events drew millions, were endorsed by governments, reviewed in newspapers, and treated as normal Sunday entertainment for families. Europe quite literally built its racial ideology in public — with tickets sold at the gate. The Expulsion of Asians from Uganda: Power, Nationalism, and Consequence In 1972, Idi Amin ordered the expulsion of Asians from Uganda, forcing tens of thousands—many of Indian descent—to leave within 90 days. According to what I wrote, this decision was rooted in deeper historical and economic tensions that came from colonial rule. During British colonialism, Asians were brought into East Africa and placed in key roles within trade and business. Over time, they became dominant in the commercial sector, while many indigenous Ugandans remained excluded from economic power. This created resentment and a sense of imbalance in wealth and opportunity. Amin framed the expulsion as “economic liberation,” arguing that Uganda’s economy should be returned to native Africans. To some, this was seen as an effort to reclaim control and dignity after colonialism. However, the consequences were severe. The sudden removal of experienced business owners disrupted the economy—shops closed, supply chains collapsed, and industries declined. Many of the redistributed businesses struggled to survive. The human cost was just as devastating. Families who had lived in Uganda for generations were forced to leave everything behind and rebuild their lives in foreign countries.
