The Taurus Mountain Race has been cancelled. This is my very personal view, and I’m not judging anyone’s decisions but my own. I hope you never have to understand it.
.
It started after Checkpoint 2, somewhere above 3,000 metres. Rain all day at 3°C. Then hail. Then sleet, then snow. Gusts of 100–120 km/h shoved our bikes sideways, temperatures dropping toward zero. I was soaked to the bone, then hypothermic. My dry layers stayed in the bag. If I got stuck out there, they were my last line of defense. Then, completely drained, I crashed.
.
Samuele and I found shelter in a steel box. Little strength, no idea what tomorrow would hold. Mud. Landslides. 50 km that could take 2 hours or 12. At 2 a.m., after careful assessment, I messaged race HQ via satellite for advice and requested evacuation. For the protocal: I didn’t hit SOS, because I could still survive where I was.
.
At first light, rescue teams set out by land. Air rescue never got clearance. Off-road vehicles fought their way up. All four of us came down alive.
.
The hardest 24 hours of my life, and the closest I’ve ever come to not making it back. You can train for years and carry every piece of gear. When enough things go wrong at once, the mountain doesn’t care. Yes, I made mistakes too. That’s human when you’re cold, exhausted and on the edge. We’ve seen the best mountaineers of our generation die in far less complex situations. Experience is an advantage, not an insurance policy.
.
Few people know what it feels like to come that close and walk away. I don’t know yet what it will do to me. I love these adventures, but I’m not chasing the next, more extreme thing. Maybe the real skill is knowing when the mountain has said enough. And remembering: it’s just a bike ride.
.
We’re all disappointed. This wasn’t the TMR we prepared for with so much passion, time and money. I feel for all of us, whatever our perspective is. All I ask: keep the discussion respectful and constructive, and accept that every view may differ. Be grateful and go ride your bike. Because you still can.
.
To Nelson, the TMR team, and the rescue squads who came for us: thank you.

Family feud: You’re not the 1st child. You have been given 4 choice flats and medical support — Billionaire Okoya’s Family tackles Fatai

The family of billionaire industrialist Razaq Okoya has disputed Fatai Okoya’s claim that he is his father’s first child, insisting that he is the third child.

In a statement signed by Nathaniel Omeninwan, senior public relations manager of Eleganza Industries Ltd, the family responded after Fatai publicly sought forgiveness and reconciliation with his father following 40 years apart.

Fatai had described his father’s rejection as painful and accused Shade Okoya, his father’s wife, of preventing him from seeing the industrialist on his birthday.

However, the family denied the allegations, claiming Fatai had received substantial financial support, including four flats in Lagos and assistance with medical bills.

“The Okoya family finds it regrettable that Fatai Okoya (who is in fact the third child of Aare Rasaq Okoya, CON) has dragged what are otherwise private family matters into the public domain to attract public sympathy, gain attention and unjustifiably discredit other family members,” the statement read.

The family added that Fatai’s disagreement with his father began long before Okoya married Shade.

“Fatai Okoya has benefited immensely from his father and continues to benefit. He lives in, and has been given, four flats by his father in Ogunlana Surulere, and has at times been receiving payment for his medical bills,” it stated.

On the allegation against Shade, the family said she did not prevent Fatai from seeing his father during the birthday medical outreach, claiming several guests witnessed their encounter.
