Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee shared a truly wild confession on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, detailing a “rock bottom” moment with bandmate Nikki Sixx that’s almost unbelievable. In the late 1980s, after running out of their usual substances like heroin and cocaine, the two resorted to mainlining Jack Daniel’s whiskey directly into their veins. Lee described being able to taste the alcohol in his bloodstream, an experience as intense and dangerous as other narcotics.

This harrowing event was a profound wake-up call for Mötley Crüe. Recognizing the life-threatening extent of their substance abuse, the entire band collectively decided to enter separate rehab centers in 1989. This marked a pivotal step towards sobriety and even led them to hire a band therapist – a unique move at the time – to help navigate their recovery while recording their massively successful fifth studio album, “Dr. Feelgood.”

Released in 1989, “Dr. Feelgood” became a commercial and critical triumph, cementing Mötley Crüe’s status as hard rock icons. It’s a powerful testament to how even the darkest moments can lead to profound change and renewed creative energy in music history, showcasing a band that faced its demons head-on.
