This conversation took place 4 years ago when my son was 18, and we’ve heard from so many families since then who are going through something similar.
Let’s normalize open, honest conversations about mental health struggles. Let’s normalize vulnerability. Let’s normalize not feeling embarrassed about our imperfect, messy lives.

You can read more about our story in our book, I Can Fix This (and other lies I told myself while parenting my struggling child).

To anyone reading this: If a child develops depression, anxiety, irritability, sleep problems, difficulty concentrating, or sudden behavioral changes, it may be worth looking beyond mental health alone and considering physical factors as well. Our medical system often is not directed to address the holistic cause, but the brain doesn’t work without the rest of the body functioning well. Things that may be worth checking: • Iron and ferritin • Vitamin B12 and folate • Vitamin D • Thyroid function • Glucose and metabolic health • Signs of chronic inflammation • Gut health, celiac disease, and malabsorption • Infections and parasitic causes when clinically suspected Parasites are not always detected on the first test. Gut and systemic inflammation can affect immune signaling, tryptophan metabolism, the kynurenine pathway, oxidative stress, and brain function. Genetics may also play a role. Certain genetic variants do not necessarily cause a disorder on their own, but they may reduce the body’s ability to compensate for inflammation, stress, nutrient deficiencies, or other physiological burdens. A vulnerability may therefore remain silent for years and become noticeable only after additional stress on the system. A lot of times undiagnosed parasitic infections can wreck a havoc on digestive system, increasing digestive inflammation, triggering genes and eventually creating neuro inflammation. Sending a big hug to all of you and your children.

My family and I are in the middle of a mental health crisis with my youngest daughter. I plan to buy your book and read it. Thank you for sharing so transparently and honestly. I know we are not alone.
