But I thought it was “mEnTAL heAlTh?” Wouldn’t that require more social workers and counselors instead of law enforcement? How are they trained on de-escalation and mental health training?

The Pentagon said it has made a criminal referral in an alleged leak case, claiming the firing of Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia was necessary “to protect sensitive information.”

Sylvia was fired this week without any previous explanation from the Pentagon, stunning many of his colleagues and leading some of them to question the narrative being promoted by members of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s team.

One of Sylvia’s colleagues told The Post that the general has repeatedly denied that he leaked classified information but did acknowledge having past interactions with journalists.

Historically, such professional relationships were considered acceptable for a senior officer with Sylvia’s standing in the military and past assignments. Under Hegseth, though, they have been heavily scrutinized amid the secretary’s vilification of the news media and the numerous unflattering revelations that journalists have surfaced about his stewardship of the Pentagon.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said that the Defense Department has “zero tolerance for the intentional, unauthorized disclosure of classified information” and that following an “extensive” internal investigation, the matter — “along with others” — had been referred to the Justice Department “for potential legal action.”

The action against Sylvia coincides with Hegseth’s broader purge of top military officers — personnel moves that have often been made without public explanation — and appears to mark the first time the secretary has referred a senior uniformed officer for potential prosecution.

Sylvia served previously as commander of the 101st Airborne Division, colleagues noted, and had been highly regarded and seen as having the potential to become a four-star general.

He also had been decorated for valor in combat. In September 2013, he earned a Bronze Star with V for his actions in a battle in Afghanistan. He was wounded in the battle, earning a Purple Heart as a result.
