baggage handlers consistently show a complete lack of respect for our mobility aids, and their damage can render us immobile in an unfamiliar place with no suitable backup. the system as it stands is not even close to good enough, and it is up to airports and airlines to step up and improve their processes so that things like this don’t happen. @adelaideairport @qantas VD: Jasmin, a femme presenting person, describes her experience flying out of Adelaide Airport as a wheelchair user, where her wheelchair was loaded upside down onto the plane, causing damage to the frame. Clips of the wheelchair being loaded incorrectly are overlaid over clips of Jasmin speaking to camera, and there are captions up the top of the screen. END VD. Transcription:
Jasmin:  “When are we going to develop a safer way for wheelchair users to fly? I’ve flown out of Adelaide Airport twice in the last two and a half weeks, and both times my wheelchair was loaded incorrectly, which caused damage on the frame. I tell them that it can’t be loaded upside down, and yet somehow, I look out the window of the airplane, it’s upside down. This is a $13,000 piece of equipment that allows me to move around, so where is the respect? This isn’t a suitcase that you can go into any mall and replace. This is custom-made to my body. It would take months to replace, and not to mention, be really fucking expensive. I shouldn’t have to be fearful and on high alert every single time I fly. None of us should, and yet there’s no guarantee for me that when I get to my destination, that I’m gonna be able to mobilise”
