A few weeks ago, I went to lunch with my aunt (who happens to be my boss) and cousin. It was in the middle of some big personal and business decisions/waiting games that had been dragging and looming large. On the drive back, my aunt made the comment how cool it is that even in the midst of ambiguity, daunting decisions, or even chaos, you can still go out and have a good lunch and enjoy moments with people you love.

“You can still have a good lunch.”

I’ve thought about that line several times since. About how sometimes I get caught in the noise of the lack and the longing. Sometimes I forget to sit in the moment—with the people I’m with—and just appreciate it.

At lunch that day, the questions weren’t answered. The decisions weren’t made. But we talked, we laughed, and we shared great food and conversation.

Since then, some decisions have been made. Others are still in the works. Some thoughts are settled. Others are still evolving. But what I’m learning is how beautiful and thrilling and interesting the messy middle can be when you spend time focusing on all there is to love, and sometimes you just need a good lunch.
