I’m doing a bit of a visual rebrand as I transition toward a really, really exciting project for which I’ll be using this account as a platform. Thought I might as well reintroduce myself as I still have some followers from when I was 11 years old and posting my cupcake decorating pictures.
My name is Maddy, I’m mostly a musician and also a home cook and a bit of a witch and quite monkish and a couple other things. I’m a senior at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor but I’m from Toronto. I grew up in a family full of activists and was raised to fight for a better food system. My relationship with food has seldom been easy. I’ve had bad anxiety and eating disorder tendencies since I was a kid (my mom would tell baby sitters not to bother with trying to give me snacks because “she doesn’t like to eat too much sugar”), and I went way downhill with my anorexia at age 13. I recovered somewhat, but following was an onslaught of health issues that took over my life and my mental health throughout my adolescence. I was (and am) what
@sarahiswolflarsen would call a “Woman of Mysterious Illness”, and I seek as many opportunities as I can find to talk about it with girls in similar positions. I’m that girl at the party sitting in a corner giving a seminar about hormone health to the other WOMIs at the function. I’m the friend you text from the herbs aisle asking which one will make your cold go away, I’m the friend who will help you figure out what birth control to use, I’m the one who will always have something ready in the crockpot when you come over, and it’ll probably involve beans. One day I’d like to have an acre somewhere for a small permaculture farm.
I’ve been down the rabbit hole and back. I know every corner of the crazy “wellness” internet, I’ve seen the pro-anorexia tumblr bullshit, I’ve watched the sourdough-to-MAGA pipeline unfold before all our eyes and thankfully skipped that one. Lately I’ve just felt like turning off the info storm and returning to the basics. Local food, simple meals, the recipes of my ancestors, dinners by candle light, good coffee in the early morning…I want every moment to feel like a little resistance.
