What if I painted a mural?🤍

I asked my husband that question standing in our guest room, at one of the most confusing times of my life. Shortly after finding out I was pregnant, I got laid off. I felt so much joy and so much fear at the same time, and I didn’t know where to put any of it.

So I put it into her. Our baby girl, and her nursery.

I’d never painted a mural before. But I’ve always loved to paint and create, and for the first time in a long time, I felt inspired. 🐶 ⛰️

I hand-drew every line, inspired by Stilton, our first baby, and by every trail, mountain, and adventure that led us here. I wanted her to wake up every morning surrounded by our story 🥹🩷

“Worst case scenario, I’ll just paint over it,” I told him.

20+ hours later, I could never paint over it. This wall has held my worries, my hopes, and so many quiet tears. It’s the most meaningful thing I’ve ever designed, and it isn’t even finished yet. 🎨🌿🐾

I’d love to know what you think so far. Would you ever paint a mural in your home? 👇

In an adorable moment caught on camera, a mother elephant walking past a store spotted a tiny hat that seemed perfect for her little one. Using her trunk, she carefully picked up the hat and placed it on her baby, giving the little elephant an unexpectedly cute makeover. After making sure her baby was all dressed up, the mother simply continued walking, as if she had just completed a little shopping trip for her favourite child.

The sweet interaction left viewers charmed by the sight of a mother elephant seemingly choosing an accessory for her baby. While the little one got to enjoy its adorable new look, the mother's gentle actions made the moment even more special. It's these small and amusing encounters that remind us how fascinating animal behaviour can be, especially when it comes to the bond between a mother and her young.

Looks like even in the animal kingdom, mothers can't resist picking out something cute for their little ones.

My interest in Josefa de Óbidos, a Spanish-Portuguese 17th century painter, was the jumping-off point for my collaboration with @chelseafussflowers in her recent floral retreat in Lisbon (the retreat was called “Art, Flowers, & Gardens of Lisbon”, a title I find very evocative!).

Chelsea always wants her guests to be immersed in Portuguese culture and heritage and she and I worked together to translate Josefa’s legacy into different floral experiences for her guests.

On my first morning of teaching we headed out to Évora to see a few of Josefa’s paintings at the @museunfreimanueldocenaculo. We chose Évora because Lisbon’s old masters museum, the @mnaa_lisboa, is undergoing renovations and has been closed for a year, and Évora is both a short drive from Lisbon and an amazing city in its own right.

I started by giving them a little talk about Josefa’s background and career and then I went on explaining each of the paintings on display. We talked about the omnipresence of religion in Baroque society, the growing importance of sugar, the seasonality of sweets and the symbolism of flowers. As in 17th century poetry, paintings were filled with metaphors and fauna and flora were often associated with Christian meaning. We identified each flower and talked about what it could have meant to 17th century viewers.

In order to make this session a bit more interactive and three-dimensional, I brought along some of my paper flowers, specifically the ones I made following Josefa’s very rigorous and accurate depictions. Most of them are native to Portugal, which makes it even more interesting in terms of general knowledge and conservation.

After the visit to the museum we went to @ximenamaier’s home, where we were treated to an excellent lunch, animated conversation, a talk on the history of tiles and a tile painting workshop.

I’ve written more about the whole experience on my substack, the link is in my bio.
