So excited to show everyone one of the pieces of work I made for my End of the year exhibition at @leedsartsuni !! This is 1/4 of my work from my research on *Anthropomorphism in Koyapunem*
The Gond tribe’s religion, Koyapunem (“the way of nature”), is a vibrant animistic faith that reveres spirits inhabiting trees, rivers, and animals, reflecting their deep bond with the forests of central India. Central to their tradition is an untitled Gondi folk song about the Mahua tree, their “Tree of Life” for its spiritual and economic significance, its flowers yielding a potent liquor pretty important to rituals and in general sustenance. The song narrates how drinking Mahua liquor transforms humans into animals, skittishness of a mouse, slothfulness of a pig, a pigeon’s freedom, or in this piece, the boldness of the tiger. Each reflecting stages of intoxication and how the spirit of the intoxicated humans change into these animals. My artwork draws on this narrative of capturing the anthropomorphic interplay between humans and nature!!
