Empty Seat?
I am not sure anybody reads text added to photographs here anymore?
But I wanted to talk about this one.
I bought a new large studio camera. And this day, a huge portrait lens arrived in the post. So I left the house to try it out. This gentleman was the first person who caught my eye. I quickly knelt down and grabbed this shot before he noticed. But as I wanted to test the lens. I refocused on his right eye and took a few more shots. My normal thing would be to smile and move on. But it did not feel right because of my unusually conspicuous equipment.
So I walked over to him and said hello. It seemed natural to sit down beside him. I explained that my camera and lens were new, and I was trying them out. "I hope you did not mind, but you looked fabulous sitting there, so I took a photograph."
He paused for thought and smiled. "No, I felt special." Another pause then added, "like a film star." His words caused a wave of emotion to flow through me.
We continued to talk, and he told me this bench was a special place for him and his wife. They often come here to talk and take in the veiw. After some time, we hugged, and I left.
When I now look at this photograph, I realise why I purposely framed it. The seat beside him was not empty. But why do I cry.
