I was invited to join a delegation and travel to Palestine. I didn’t take the decision lightly as I am aware that Palestinian people themselves are not easily able to travel home once they have been displaced (if at all). The invitation made by a Palestinian charity was to ‘come and see then go and tell’ and so I have spent the last two weeks learning everything I can about life under the occupation. Our incredible Palestinian guides have shown us all over the occupied territories and we have had the privilege of meeting many beautiful people who opened their homes to us and shared their stories. It’ll take a while to process what I’ve seen here, the level of depravity and the cruelty of the behaviour shown towards the Palestinian people is overwhelming, enraging and devastating. And yet…their spirit continues to be unbroken. Exhausted yes but still steadfast. We must never ever stop in our efforts to free Palestine and to free ourselves. In the words of Nelson Mandela whose statue stands proud in Ramallah ‘We know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians’.
