Aug 29 – Sept 1: Mega Weekend in the San Juans
What a weekend! Bagged 4 fourteeners and one of Colorado’s great alpine traverses—definitely one for the books.
Saturday:
We kicked things off with Uncompahgre and Wetterhorn. After summiting both, we pushed into the Wetterhorn–Matterhorn Traverse (class 3/4), making it most of the way through before having to call it due to daylight. Still, an epic effort with two 14ers, some alpine trail running, and a full-on choss-fest of a ridge.
Stats: ~21 miles, ~8,000 ft of vert.
Sunday:
Rest day—much needed. Fueled up, recovered, and prepped for Monday’s mission.
Monday:
We tackled the El Diente–Mt. Wilson Traverse, which delivered big time. Much better rock quality than Saturday, and the climbing was incredible. I stayed ridge-direct the entire way, keeping it at solid class 5 (around 5.4) with a touch of exposure—super fun and confidence-building. That ridge lit a fire in me for more alpine scrambling.
Stats: ~16 miles, ~5,500 ft of vert.
All in all, a huge weekend in the mountains with great friends, big objectives, and unforgettable views. Couldn’t ask for more.
