Emotional labour is the invisible work of noticing, anticipating and managing everyone else’s emotional needs. And for many eldest daughters, it can start very young. You become the one who notices when Mum is stressed. Who checks if Dad is okay. Who looks after the younger ones. Who remembers birthdays, appointments and problems. Who knows when someone needs help before they even ask. Everyone starts seeing you as the responsible one. But there’s a hidden cost. You become so good at asking, “Is everyone okay?” that you stop asking, “Am I okay?” You listen to everyone’s problems, but rarely share your own. You show up for everyone, but hesitate to ask anyone to show up for you. And sometimes, what looks like strength is simply being used to carrying too much. Being the eldest daughter doesn’t mean you have to be everyone’s caretaker. Learn to say: “I need help.” “I can’t handle this today.” “I need someone to listen to me.” And if you love an eldest daughter, don’t just tell her, “You’re so strong.” Check on her. Ask her what she needs. Take something off her plate. Give her a safe place to fall apart.
