Have you heard of the “arrival fallacy”? It’s the seductive train of thought that says, “I’ll be happy when...”

...When I get that job.
...When I get that partner.
...When I look a certain way, make a certain amount, have that degree...

The list goes on and on.

The truth is that once we get there, we might celebrate for a moment (if we’re lucky) and then there’s that creeping feeling:

What’s next?

MORE.

And yet, it’s a GOOD THING to have goals, desires, and dreams. We don’t want to stop reaching for those things that we want.

So how do we hold both desire and presence?

How do we balance reaching for what we want with feeling gratitude for what’s already in our hands?

There are practices to counteract the “constant craving” that KD Lang described, and they can help us to stop living for an imaginary future (or a version of ourselves that doesn’t exist) and learn to feel peace in the present.

One of them is the Question’s You’ll Wish You Asked Yourself journal. And here are a few that work for me...what practices work for you?
