NANDA DEVI, 1976 — THE STORY CONTINUES When Devi finally reached Camp IV shortly before midnight, she was exhausted. She had been suffering from severe diarrhea and a hernia. At 7,350 metres, her strength was fading. Over the following days, she remained in camp while the weather deteriorated. On September 6, her father, Willi Unsoeld, climbed up to join her, Peter Lev and Andy Harvard. Despite everything, there was still laughter in the tent. They drank tea, talked and remembered earlier climbs. Devi was weak, but nobody expected what was about to happen. On September 7, a blizzard kept them inside. Devi had a terrible night. By morning, they knew they had to get her down. There would be no summit attempt. On September 8, at 11:45 a.m., they were preparing to leave when Devi suddenly asked Peter Lev to check her pulse. Then she said, very calmly: “I am going to die.” Moments later, she lost consciousness. Willi and Andy tried desperately to revive her. They continued for more than half an hour. But Devi was gone. She was only 22 years old. At that altitude, on such difficult terrain, it was impossible to bring her body down. Willi, Andy and Peter knelt together in the snow and said their farewells. Willi and Andy wrapped Devi in her sleeping bag and committed her body to the mountain after which she had been named.Willi gave one last yodel into the mountains. There was no answer. Then the three men began their descent through the blizzard. It was dangerous. At one point, Peter discovered that the fixed rope he was descending was hanging free, unattached at its lower end, above the precipice. They finally reached Camp III at 10 p.m. Days later, back at Base Camp, Willi sent a telegram home to Jolene, Devi’s mother. It contained the words: “Body committed to mountain. From beauty into beauty.” Pic John Roskelley
Comment “READY” and I’ll send you 25% OFF my current MLAM Full Body, Core, and Pelvic Floor Challenge!! LAST CHANCE to join for prizes & price goes UP at the end of TODAY!👏🔥 I have seen SO many women come into my programming wanting to “strengthen their pelvic floor”…yet they don’t even realize they’re dealing with a TENSE and TIGHT pelvic floor to begin with!! I never blanket statement anything in this work…but I will say probably 99.9% of the women I work with have some type of tension-related issue. Whether it’s in the posterior chain, the pelvic floor itself, the abdominals…or all the above SOMEWHERE we’re holding onto tension! And what are so many women being told to do??? CONTRACT. CONTRACT. CONTRACT. 🙄 For the one, off, on, off corner of the internet….telling women to hold for 30-40 sec straight?! GOOD GRIEF. PLEASE STOP. This advice is doing women such a disservice!! Can Kegels have a place? Sure. But not every woman needs MORE contraction. Some women need to learn how to LENGTHEN, RELAX, coordinate their breath, manage pressure, and THEN strengthen effectively! Our pelvic floor needs to be DYNAMIC👏 It needs to lengthen AND contract. And we need to stop treating it like an isolated muscle that just needs to be squeezed all day❌❌ There is SO MUCH MORE to pelvic floor health than Kegels!! And this is EXACTLY how I approach my training. Strength work, pelvic floor release, deep core connection, breathing mechanics, pressure management…ALL OF IT! Women deserve better education and programming that actually considers the body as a WHOLE!🤍 Comment “READY” and I’ll send you 25% OFF my current challenge!! Last chance to enter for BIG PRIZES and price increases at the end of TODAY! Join & submit your photos by 11:59pm ET to be eligible to win part of $101,000+ in cash prizes!!! I would be SO honored to have you join us!! Let’s gooooo👏👏🤍 Purchase required. 18+. Void in Maryland, Canada, and where prohibited.
