Federal agents executed a search warrant at the home of Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota on Monday. The Justice Department has historically avoided such investigative moves related to political candidates so close to elections. The search of Omar’s Washington-area home comes after Department of Homeland Security officials said in recent months that they were investigating Omar, a Democrat, over her family’s immigration paperwork. When our Constitution came into force in 1950, it said the State can’t discriminate against any citizen because of their caste. Over the years we also created categories like SC, ST and OBC, so communities that were kept out of schools, jobs and power for centuries could finally get a fair share. But a law can only change what the State does. It can’t change who people are willing to marry or let into their kitchens. Those rules are still made inside families and villages, and they are far older than any law. What keeps them alive is that caste isn’t just one group pressing down on another. It’s a long ladder where almost every group stands above someone. Even people who face discrimination are often raised to look down on the caste below them, so very few want the ladder gone completely. Ambedkar called this graded inequality. So when someone says caste is a thing of the past, they usually mean it’s no longer a problem for them. For the people at the bottom of that ladder, it still decides where they can live and how they are spoken to every day. Movie: Article 15 Streaming on: Youtube
