🎬🎹 Ryuichi Sakamoto – Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence Ryuichi Sakamoto – piano 🎹 • David Bowie turned down the invitation to sing this melody. The story comes from Ryuichi Sakamoto himself, who says he alone had the idea of a sung version of the theme and first invited his co-star. Sakamoto then called on the singer David Sylvian, author of the lyrics, who traveled to Japan to record the song Forbidden Colours. The director Nagisa Oshima entrusted Sakamoto with the score for the film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, the first the composer wrote for the cinema, and it earned Sakamoto a BAFTA for best score. • The melody, according to a Japanese piano encyclopedia, uses a five-note scale from the tradition of Japan. Listen again and pay attention to the beginning: after the first notes, the piano stays for a moment on nothing but the resonance of what has already sounded, and then a low strike arrives. Taken as a whole, the passage starts almost whispered and ends at its strongest level, without dropping back. • The filming of this concert was directed by Neo Sora, Sakamoto's son, in September 2022, at NHK's Studio 509 in Tokyo. Sakamoto said they recorded only a few pieces a day, with great care. Sora says that, in the concert film, his father plays more slowly than usual, partly because of his health, partly because he had become obsessed with hearing the sounds fade away. The video is entirely in black and white. In the wide shot, Sakamoto appears in profile, with no audience, with the sheets of the score loose on the piano and a lamp lit overhead. After the session, Sakamoto said he felt empty and that his condition got worse for a few weeks. The composer died 194 days after the last day of shooting. • 👉 Follow for the best of classical music daily on your feed. • #ryuichisakamoto #merrychristmasmrlawrence #piano #classicalmusic
Never give up. 諦めないで. Asian Games 2026 Gold medalist Yui SUSAKI never did. I first met Yui a few years ago, during her training camp in France ahead of the 2024 Olympics. Despite her incredible wrestling record, she was approachable, always smiling and welcoming to everyone. A year later, we met again, first to document her training at her gym in Tokyo, then in Normandy for the NWC. No matter the occasion, she always welcomed me with her unique energy and warmth. An amazing human being behind the athlete. I’m so honoured to have had her as a friend throughout these years. After she missed out on Olympic gold, I honestly didn’t know how she would react, given how untouchable her record had seemed until then. But she handled it with grace, and got straight back to work. Such an example of resilience for us all. Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win. But what matters most is this: Trust the process and embrace the grind, no matter what. I was so honoured to witness her compete at the Asian Games in Japan this year and bring home the gold medal. Thank you for reminding us all to : Never give up. 諦めないで。
