UMD’s Department of Government and Politics

@umdgvpt is excited to announce the launch of our brand-new International Relations (IR) major — a program designed to prepare students to understand and address the world’s most urgent challenges.

From global conflict and cooperation to climate change, migration, and international political economy, the IR major equips students with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experiences to lead in today’s interconnected world.

Students can choose between two distinct pathways:

✨ B.A. – A broad focus on diplomacy, global systems & policy
📊 B.S. – A data-driven, research-intensive track for policy analysis & graduate study

💡 Same major. Two powerful tracks. Endless opportunities.
Small class sizes. Career-shaping experiences. Professors who are leaders in international research. A major that’s timely, relevant, and designed for the next generation of global problem-solvers.

🚀 The new International Relations major at UMD isn’t just another program — it’s a launchpad for students who want to change the world.
