In case you missed it, the University of Maryland Department of Psychology @psycumd hosted its second annual PSYC Good Deed Day last Wednesday, October 7 — and more than 1,500 good deeds were added to the PSYC Good Deed Day website's global tracker!

Other highlights from the day include:

⚫ Over 80 undergraduate students participated in PSYC's on-site good deed event. This involved assembling 50 care packages for @awidercircle and creating a canned food drive for the @umdcampuspantry.

⚫ @umdpsichi held a canned food drive.

⚫ PSYC Assistant Professor Terrill Taylor's Restoring H.O.P.E. Research Lab held a book drive for DC Books to Prison, and created bookmarks.

⚫ PSYC Professor and Chair Michael Dougherty's research lab decorated cards to include in Halloween gift bags for kids in Department of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine @marylandmedicine.

⚫ PSYC Professor Jude Cassidy's Maryland Child and Family Development Laboratory wrote a bunch of notes of encouragement with chocolate attached and handed them out to random people.

⚫ The Resilient Adaptation across Culture and Context Lab @racclab led by PSYC Assistant Professor Fanita Tyrell wrote affirmations, compliments, and generally positive statements on note cards or sticky notes and left them around the UMD campus.

Thank you to all who participated! five individuals standing behind a table with a red UMD Department of Psychology tablecloth on it at PSYC Good Deed Day 2026 by @bsosumd

It was a busy week in the @bsosumd events world! Yesterday, I was also able to attend the @bahaichair's annual lecture. This year's featured speaker was Dr. Laura DeNardis, a professor and endowed chair in technology, ethics and society at @georgetownuniversity, who delivered an incredibly timely and important talk on "AI Governance for the Common Good."

I am so proud to be the dean of a college whose faculty are committed to facilitating conversations that seek to address the grand challenges of our time. In case you missed it, senior Government and Politics major Leonard Fomin will once again serve as the chair of the BSOS Dean’s Student Advisory Council (@bsosdsac)!

In addition to building upon and continuing the work he started during his first term as chair in 2025-2026, Fomin’s two main goals for this year are to find a way to better promote advising services to students, and to design a “side-car” course for students taking difficult introductory courses.
