POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Tonight, @bsosumd will celebrate its annual Evening of Gratitude event, in which scholarship donors get to meet the students whose lives they've helped change. In the spirit of gratitude, I am thrilled to share a recent donor story that Maryland Today ran, concerning the Department of African American and Africana Studies' (@umdaaas) first named professorship and the largest gift it has ever received. https://go.umd.edu/MTMcAllisterGift26

Many, many, thanks for this transformative gift, Singleton McAllister!

In case you missed it, Sangeetha Madhavan, a professor in @umdaaas and our Department of Sociology, was named a 2026-2027 faculty fellow of @umdartsforall! I look forward to learning more about how she incorporates art into her yearslong research on family systems, parenting, household dynamics and child well-being in Nairobi, Kenya ... photo of the 2026-2027 fellows of the University of Maryland's Arts for All initiative

I just have to share this heartwarming story on the impact of giving. Recently, two @psycumd students — a current undergraduate, and an alumna turned graduate student — bumped into Professor Gregory F. Ball, recognized him by name, and thanked him for creating the Gregory F. Ball Award for undergraduate students, which they both received. It was a "really nice moment" for Greg, a former @bsosumd dean, and reading about these students' appreciation and gratitude was a really nice moment for me, too! https://go.umd.edu/BallAward26 From left to right, photo of UMD psychology and neuroscience major Unisha Poudel, psychology professor Gregory F. I had the GREAT honor of helping to officially open the new playground for @umdhesp’s Language-Learning Early Advantage Program (LEAP) today!

This new playground would not have been possible without the hard work and generous contributions of so many individuals. I am so grateful for everyone’s efforts to help ensure that future generations of LEAP students will be able to explore, imagine, and forge friendships in this new space. Please join me in congratulating Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences (HESP) Professor Rochelle Newman, who was recently awarded a $725,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health! https://go.umd.edu/NewmanNIH26

With Rachel Romeo (an assistant professor in @umdhesp and @umdcollegeofed) and two former HESP postdoctoral researchers, Newman will study how noise in the home impacts language development in young children. Looking forward to the results of this work! UMD Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences Professor Rochelle Newman with orange tree leaves blurred in the background

We’re so proud of Maryland Democracy Initiative (MDI) Marketing and Communications Intern Linh Ngo for her selection as a Transform Mid-Atlantic Civic Fellow! 🎉🐢

Linh is a senior @bsosumd Economics major and has been contributing to MDI for over a year.

At MDI, we work to strengthen civic engagement and create opportunities for people to participate in democracy. Linh’s commitment to addressing economic barriers to participation connects directly to this work: a stronger democracy depends on everyone having the opportunity to get involved.

Meet our 2026 Arts for All Faculty and Graduate Student Fellows! Funded by the Sara Chase Carlson Arts for All Awards, these recipients represent a broad range of disciplines including math education, climate justice, music composition, sociology and more. As Arts for All ambassadors, our fellows will lead publicly engaged research across campus and in the surrounding community, using the arts to spark dialogue, deepen understanding, encourage problem-solving and inspire action.

We’re excited to support their work over the coming year and share their innovative research with the #UMD community! Read more about their research at the link in bio.
