my lawyer told me not to post this
Chapter 38: The Neighbor How well do you actually know your neighbors? Not at all. And they know even less about you. A long visa process isn’t only bureaucracy. Part of it is deliberate — months of waiting, so you find out whether you actually want to go. I never found the doubt. What I found was time. My course started later in the year. Every document I owned was already in an inbox belonging to Papi’s secretary. There was nothing to do but wait and answer questions about why. Then I went to the consulate to fix a line on a form. The waiting room was full of people watching a number on a screen as if looking harder would move it. My neighbor was there. Same building, same floor. Married, easily twice my age, and we had never once said good morning. He was called up before I found a seat. I caught three things. A destination. A date. Something about documents still missing. Then he lowered his voice. He came back and sat down. Men look. Not all of them and not always, but enough that you stop noticing. He didn’t look. Not once, in twenty minutes, four seats away. I know that for a fact, because I was watching to see if he would. That was new. Then his number came up again. He picked up the folder and stood. And walked to the door instead of the counter. I’ve thought about it since. The boring version is almost certainly true. They’d told him something was missing. There was nothing left to do in that room. He wasn’t hiding anything from me either. We’d never spoken. He owed me nothing, including an explanation. At the time I didn’t want the boring version. I went home with a man, a folder and a destination, and I’d invented most of it. I was also home at hours I never used to be, which is how you learn a building. Who leaves early. Whose dog that is. Which neighbor takes the stairs. He took the stairs. That week I started saying good morning. He said it back. That was the entire event. And I started taking the stairs. Nothing happened. He was polite, and always on his way somewhere. And I kept doing it. #movingabroad #visaprocess #neighbors #anaschuwaltz #anachapters
it's like picasso you learn it all just to go back to the basics. #korean #languagelearning #bilingual
The plan was to go out with @gazellesandrini , have a couple of drinks, take some cute pictures and be home at a reasonable hour. Well… we got the pictures. 😂🐈‍⬛ I don’t remember the last time I laughed this much in one night. My feet are still recovering, I probably ate half the food in that kitchen, and I’m pretty sure I left a little piece of my dignity on the dance floor. Worth every minute. 🖤🎃
Not sure I pulled off this costume, but I'll post anyways 😅
