Alex Trebek never really got a planned goodbye from Jeopardy!. He had been hosting the show since 1984, and even after announcing that he had stage 4 pancreatic cancer in 2019, he kept working and taping episodes for as long as he physically could. His final episodes were taped in late October 2020. At the time, neither Trebek nor the crew knew they would be his last. He continued hosting like normal, still joking with contestants and doing the job he had done for more than 36 years. Trebek passed away on November 8, 2020, and his final episode aired on January 8, 2021. By then, viewers knew they were watching the end of an era, which made his familiar closing words feel completely different. He hosted more than 8,000 episodes of Jeopardy! and became so closely tied to the show that for generations of viewers, Alex Trebek simply was Jeopardy!. I thank God for your life. For the years He entrusted you to this earth…even though it didn’t deserve you. For the love that He allowed me to know so deeply as your wife. You always had a way of making even the ordinary moments in life feel like a glimpse of Heaven. And to that, and much more babe, I’ll forever celebrate you. How blessed I am that God gave me a once in a lifetime love that I will spend the rest of my life thanking Him for. I can’t even imagine how many scoops of mint chocolate chip ice cream you’re having in Heaven since calories don’t count up there, but down here, we’ll still save a scoop for you. Happy birthday baby.
