Our advice for this week’s episode: Don’t Blink. TOMORROW. MIKE TOMLIN. @allstate
Afterparty
How important is the mind-muscle connection? The “mind-muscle connection” is exactly what it sounds like: when you think about the muscle you’re trying to target as you lift. Bodybuilders have been talking about it for decades, but does it actually matter? Well, there is some research suggesting it can enhance growth. A 2018 study found significantly greater biceps growth when participants focused on “feeling the muscle” rather than simply moving the weight. However, the overall body of evidence is still quite limited, and the effect doesn’t seem to be huge. I still use it sometimes in my own training though. For example, if I am trying to isolate my lats on a pulldown, I think about feeling my lats stretch and squeeze. This can help keep my mid-traps and rhomboids from taking over. I also think about using my side delts on lateral raises to prevent my traps or front delts from doing too much work. I usually skip the mind-muscle connection on heavy compound lifts like squats, presses, rows and deadlifts though, and just focus on using good form. Do you use the mind-muscle connection in your training?
