Architects and flooring installers lay end-grain wood block floors—composed of vertical wood cross-sections soaked in natural oils and resins—across industrial facilities and historic European buildings. While covering a high-traffic floor with end-grain wooden pavers looks like an exotic, indestructible design choice that should dominate modern residential construction, this historic flooring style remains rare in American homes due to high installation labor costs and extreme sensitivity to seasonal humidity swings.

The mechanism relies on vertical fiber orientation, oil polymer saturation, and subfloor expansion dynamics. Positioning wood blocks so the growth rings face upward exposes the dense vertical end-grain, which absorbs immense compressive weight without splintering and readily drinks in protective linseed or tung oil finishes. However, because wood expands and contracts radially and tangentially much more across its width than along its vertical grain, unmanaged indoor humidity changes cause these solid block arrays to buckle, cup, or shear apart unless installed over expensive, highly specialized flexible sub-membrane systems.

Honoring those who came before us, celebrating the beauty of our culture and keeping their memories alive. 🕯️🌼💀

This Día de los Muertos, I’m looking back on such a special experience walking the runway for @ilacatrina at @theshopsatlacantera in San Antonio! 🇲🇽✨

I had the honor of portraying Chalchiuhtlicue, the Aztec goddess of water, rivers and lakes, representing life, renewal, and the deep connection between nature and our ancestors. Every detail of this beautiful Catrina carried meaning and being able to bring her to life on the runway was something I’ll never forget.

What made this experience even more special was seeing how art, fashion and tradition brought so many people together. From the runway to meeting and connecting with everyone afterward, it was a beautiful reminder that Día de los Muertos is so much more than a celebration. It’s about love, remembrance and honoring the stories that live on through us. ❤️

Thank you @ilacatrina for allowing me to be part of something so meaningful and for keeping these beautiful traditions alive.

Feliz Día de los Muertos! 🌼🕯️

And I’m so proud of how this look turned out from @peterbarattistudio.
What do you think — can I go back to the Siberian frosts? I haven’t even seen snow in a long time.

When I finally decide to destroy you it’s going to be face to face.
