This morning I had surgery in Houston on my left hip to repair a torn labrum and to correct femoroacetabular impingement (hip impingement). If you aren’t aware of what that is, essentially my femoral head (top of femur bone) and hip socket aren’t the same shape. The bone at the femoral head had to be shaved down to fit in my hip socket, and the labrum was reattached. Good news is, surgery went great and when they got a first look at the labrum/ hip joint and the surrounding area, it was clear I made the right call in getting this this procedure done with how much swelling and inflammation there was in my hip. For the next 3-6 months, I’ll be in PT 3 days a week, and won’t be clipped in and back out on the road for at least 12 more weeks.
The first half of this year was incredible. From having success for the first time in road racing, to an unbelievable training block in Europe, to winning at
@tulsa_tough, I felt like I spent the first half of this year beating up on that negative voice in my head that’s always been there telling me I couldn’t put my head down and get after something.
@lucas_bourgoyne and I sat down at the beginning of the season and talked about what we wanted my goals to be, and I shit you not, we hit every.single.one.of.them; and to him, I’m incredibly thankful. For the first time in my life, I got that taste of success that came from a deeper, more intentional level of sacrifice, just for that to be taken away from what is essentially just genetic predisposition, on some random Saturday morning long ride in July.
Theres a point where it’s been so long since you’ve ridden regularly that you start to forget that fleeting feeling that you only get on a bicycle that was such a huge daily dopamine hit for me just a few months ago. I really hope I come out of this injury with some important takeaways about my time away from the bike, but most importantly, to regain that feeling whilst surrounded by all my friends on two wheels :)
See you guys soon 🥲
