🍁Here’s to the most romantic season of the year🍂

Testosterone is the most biologically active hormone a woman has, and we have testosterone receptors in every cell of our body. It affects our brain, bones, muscles and immune system, and our levels start to fall from our late 20s and early 30s.

So when doctors in the media say testosterone prescribing is “out of control”, I disagree. Only around 0.82% of women who may benefit from testosterone in the UK are prescribed it. That’s nowhere near as out of control as antidepressant prescribing, and many women I see are on antidepressants, painkillers or sleeping tablets for symptoms of low testosterone and so what they really need is treatment with testosterone.

Also describing testosterone prescribing as being “abusive” makes no sense to me either!

At my @newson.health clinic over 44,000 women have been prescribed testosterone in the past 8 years. In our research, women who were still struggling on HRT reported improvements in many symptoms including in mood and cognition after using testosterone.

Reassuringly, the incidence of side effects is very low indeed in our patients who are using testosterone. Testosterone is also about so much more than libido.

Estradiol, progesterone and testosterone all have different roles in our bodies, so we need to think about each hormone separately.

Women who want and need testosterone should be able to get it prescribed for them.
