During his holiday in Japan with Jim Hutton, Freddie sat down with Midori Tsukagoshi for an interview with Music Life magazine, photographed by Koh Hasebe. ☁︎The papers he’s holding up in these photographs? His shopping list which, he explained with laughter, ran to nine or ten pages. ♡ ✧In the shared English translation of the interview, Freddie described buying twenty to thirty hibachi, traditional charcoal heaters, prompting everyone to ask what exactly he intended to do with so many. His purchases also included artwork, kimonos, tansu chests, silver sake kettles and a silver teapot. ☁︎The accompanying shopping list gives an even fuller glimpse: lacquer candlesticks, Japanese chests, a Buddhist temple table, a sword stand, lacquer tables, and Cartier lighters and pens. There was plenty destined for Garden Lodge. ✧He also spoke about staying in a traditional Japanese inn in Kyoto for the first time, sleeping comfortably on a futon and bathing in a hinoki cypress-wood tub. Its resemblance to an enormous sake cup had inspired him to joke about pouring sake into it and, after being told it was good for the skin, he decided to try it. 🤭 ☁︎Alongside those funny holiday recollections, the conversation turned to what mattered most to him. Freddie spoke about music being his life, his confidence in his work, and how he could still find happiness helping other musicians through his experience and ideas. ✧A shopping list several pages long, laughter over his purchases, and a few words about the music at the centre of his life, all part of the conversation behind these photographs. 📖 Interview: Midori Tsukagoshi for Music Life, 1986.
