In June 2008, the body of 30-year-old Travis Alexander was discovered in the shower of his Mesa, Arizona home. He had suffered multiple stab wounds, a gunshot to the head, and a slit throat, and his body had already begun decomposing. Suspicion quickly turned toward his ex-girlfriend, Jodi Arias, especially after police recovered a camera from his washing machine that contained photos of the pair earlier that day—followed by disturbing images of Travis bleeding.
Investigators determined that Travis had been attacked in the shower, chased through the hallway, and stabbed repeatedly even after he was incapacitated. Though Arias initially denied being there, she later admitted to being present but falsely claimed self-defense. She cleaned the scene, hid evidence, then drove 1,000 miles home while pretending to be concerned for Travis, even leaving him voicemails. She was arrested a month later in California.
In 2013, Arias was convicted of first-degree murder. The jury couldn’t agree on the death penalty, resulting in a life sentence without parole. While incarcerated, she gave media interviews, sold artwork, and appealed multiple times, costing the state millions in legal expenses. Today, she remains imprisoned at Perryville Prison, and the photos she took before and after the murder became central to the case against her.
