Never in the field of human conflict was so much risked by one man for so little. Donald Trump is threatening to cripple Ukraine in its fight for survival—and to expose Europe to Russian aggression—seemingly for the pitiful prize of minimising his losses in next month’s midterm elections. Tesla has demonstrated its redesigned Roadster performing extraordinary manoeuvres, including driving along a specially designed curved ramp, travelling upside down and briefly flying through the air before landing safely. The demonstration took place at a SpaceX facility in McGregor, Texas, on October 15, nearly nine years after Tesla first unveiled the next-generation Roadster in November 2017. Elon Musk shared footage of the demonstration on X with the caption, “Turns out the future does have flying cars.” The vehicle is expected to feature SpaceX-developed cold-gas thrusters, which use pressurised gas to generate thrust and potentially enable movements beyond those of conventional cars. However, the demonstration took place under controlled conditions and does not establish that the Roadster can function as an everyday flying car. Questions surrounding safety, regulations and practical use remain unresolved. After years of delays, production is reportedly planned for 2028, meaning the futuristic vehicle is still some distance from becoming a reality for customers.
