Jerusalem syndrome is a rare psychological condition in which a person develops intense religious or spiritual delusions after visiting Jerusalem. Individuals affected may believe they are a biblical character, a prophet, or chosen for a divine mission. The condition is most often temporary and usually occurs in people who already have an underlying mental health vulnerability, though in rare cases it appears without any previous diagnosis.

Symptoms can include anxiety, confusion, obsessive religious behavior, compulsive preaching, and dressing in white robes or attempting ritual purification. Treatment typically involves removing the individual from the triggering environment, providing psychiatric care, and, when necessary, short-term hospitalization. Most people fully recover within days or weeks once they receive proper care and leave Jerusalem.
