I’ve had nearly 20 messages this morning passing comment on this photo which has been officially released by the Met and which has appeared on several Social Media sites. The messages have come from serving and retired members of the Military, former Authorised Firearms Officers (AFOs) and civilian shooters. The main comments being about the female officer’s apparent lack of muzzle awareness and her finger being on the trigger, an absolute safety No-No. Firstly the female officer is clearly not an AFO as she is wearing the standard white shirt worn by street duty officers and the sign behind clearly states Women in Firearms attachment which means, almost certainly, that she is simply attending an awareness opportunity laid on by the Specialist Firearms Command to allow officers to learn more about the specialisation. At the point the photo was taken she may not even have had the opportunity to fire a weapon under supervision. The male officer is probably an instructor involved in the day and smiling for the camera, can’t even see her trigger finger but knows for certain that a) there is no magazine on the weapon and b) that there is a luminous orange flag in the breach indicating that it is impossible for a round to be chambered. I doubt very much a single 19 instructor or operational officer saw the photo before it was released but it will certainly have been approved by someone senior that wouldn’t know a Howitzer from a HILTI- gun and who, even if problems with the photo had been pointed out, will have seen a gun bearing, Muslim female officer in a hijab as a massive win that would far out weigh any damage caused to the credibility of the professionals who carry firearms daily in order to keep the public safe.
