You just got the keys… now what?
Before you kick your feet up and celebrate with takeout on the floor… here are 8 smart things every new homeowner should do right after closing:
1. Change the locks. You never know who still has a copy… dog walker, contractor, old roommate, ex, ex’s cousin…
2. Swap out the toilet seats. I don’t care how clean they looked. This is your throne now.
3. Replace the HVAC filters. Breathing air from the last owner’s pets, dust, or mystery smells? Hard pass.
4. Flush the water heater. Sediment builds up and kills efficiency. A quick flush gives it a fresh start.
5. Locate the gas and water shut-off valves. Trust me, you want to know where they are before something leaks.
6. Test or replace smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. A ten-dollar battery beats a thousand-dollar problem.
7. Apply for any available homeowner tax rebates or credits. A few minutes of paperwork can save you serious money.
8. Review your home insurance every year. Loyalty doesn’t always reward you… but shopping around usually does.
