Director Yemi Bamiro speaks to the moment that hit him hardest during filming BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL, he pointed to filming the Grandassa Models.
The Grandassa Models (@theoriginalgrandassamodels) were a group of Black women in the 1960s who redefined beauty through natural hair, African-inspired style, and unapologetic pride. Through Kwame Brathwaite’s images, they became the core of the Black Is Beautiful movement and reshaped how Black beauty was seen.
Reuniting with them decades later created a powerful full-circle moment that honors their legacy and lasting cultural impact.
Today is the last day to stream BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL: The Kwame Brathwaite Story on DOC NYC. See link in bio.
