Freddy Peralta is an interesting case study in in-season adjustments since joining the Rays. โ  โ  Letโ€™s break down some of the changes heโ€™s made โ€“ and what this can teach us about in-season adjustments. ๐Ÿค”โ  โ  First โ€“ and most obvious is that his release side has shifted 4 inches further towards 3B. This was the direct result of shifting his position on the rubber to play up the angles โ€“ an intentional change that makes sense given the league-wide positive trend of same-sided four seams and breaking balls.โ  โ  ๐Ÿ“ FF horizontal approach angle to RHH: -2.59 โ†’ -2.93ยฐโ  ๐Ÿ“ Horizontal release angle: -2.96 โ†’ -3.70ยฐโ  ๐Ÿ“ Sweeper HAA now at -5.13ยฐ, well into outlier territory (Slide 3)โ  โ  Letโ€™s take a look at some of the other metrics:โ  โ  ๐Ÿ“Š Extension: 6.5 โ†’ 6.7 ftโ  ๐Ÿ“Š Effective velocity on FF: 94.5 โ†’ 95.5 mph (actual velo: 94.2 โ†’ 94.8 mph)โ  ๐Ÿ“Š Lower release height from increased trunk flexionโ  ๐Ÿ“Š VAA: -4.06 โ†’ -3.79ยฐ on the fastball, elite territory alongside Kimbrel and Diaz (Slide 4)โ  โ  But where does this come from? Take a look at the early lateral tilt generated with the Mets versus the more stacked initial move with the Rays. Among other things, this leads to a more stacked posture into landing and a more forward-flexed trunk at ball release. It also creates better angles to rotate into the lead leg block, helping to explain the slight bump in velocity as well. โ  โ  Looking further into the first move, take a look at the pre-set back leg hinge and the forward trunk posture. Not only does this pre-set him in a more glute-dominant position, but his leg lift now drives him into a coiled position at the pelvis. Instead of leaning backwards into peak leg lift, heโ€™s pre-setting tension, finding his glute, and coiling into a stable back leg without tipping uphill.
