Keanu Reeves choosing Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” as the one song he could listen to for the rest of his life feels fitting for someone with such a deep appreciation for post-punk. When Stephen Colbert posed the question during his Colbert Questionert segment, Reeves eventually settled on the 1980 classic, a song built around Peter Hook’s melodic bassline, Bernard Sumner’s guitar and synthesizers, and Ian Curtis’s unmistakable voice.

Released in June 1980, shortly after Curtis’s death, “Love Will Tear Us Apart” became Joy Division’s best-known song and a defining track of post-punk. Its combination of an almost danceable rhythm and lyrics about emotional disconnection has given it a lasting resonance across generations. Reeves has also spoken about admiring the song’s melody, lyrics and bassline, making his choice a glimpse into the musical sensibilities of an actor who is also a lifelong musician.
