8 months agoWe compare ourselves to different genders now? What the fuck. Cant we all achieve things and not compare with other people lol.
a year agoMaybe we can’t heavily influence what climbing media covers, but I love following badass female climbers. When one of y’all posts an accomplishment, or re-posts another woman’s accomplishment I think that’s a great opportunity to show some love and celebrate that person. Keep reposting each other! That’s also how I find new climbers who are killing it. 🔥🙌🧗♀️
a year agoAwesome conversation! After climbing for 35+ yrs and getting up to “only” V12, it is amazing what the younger generation is doing now. Absolutely incredible and female/male hardly seems to matter. The coolest thing is that it’s all still such a personal journey and we can each have such satisfaction in the process no matter the relative difficulty. It’s just as true now as it ever was: “The best climber is the one having the most fun!” 🙌
a year agoGenuinely curious if this has more to do with news only reporting history making feats/the top grades and less to do with gender? I remember when Margo Hayes sent the La Rambla and Biographie it was wide spread in the community. I don’t follow climbing news too often so idk if men get more coverage for grades less than V16 or V17
a year agoThe downside of being a peer reviewed sport. We're forever in this arbitrary loop of what is impressive and difficult. If it was Vhard for you, then it's impressive. Somehow we got a throw out the status quo and just enjoy it. (Coming from a guy who doesn't know how to do this)
a year agoAt least for my channel, the big number seems to be the driving force behind everything. "Female climber does historic FA of V14" generally gets far less attention than "Male climber repeats Burden... again," even though the first is arguably far more interesting than the latter. Same for Laura Rogora's 8c+ onsight. That should have been far far faaar bigger news than it was but barely heard anyone talk about it because the number's so small. Only place where engagement seems to be quite similar between men and women is with comp climbing and I think the lack of grades is a huge factor!
a year agoMisogyny in the climbing community seems to only come from the Boulder Bros, who are encroaching on the climbing community. The climbing community I know and surround myself with, are the most amazing and supportive group I've ever been a part of. Every success is a triumph, regardless of grade or gender. We push eachother to become stronger and better, every session. Anyone doing differently, is not part of the true climbing community, and not worth the consideration.
a year agoI also see this thing personally where females I climb with seem to get in there heads too much and don't realize how strong they are because of how strong there male climbing friends are and how there accomplishments aren't seen as equally impressive even if at a different scale.
