this is my favorite project i’ve made in school so far <3 i’ve been really exploring quilting and its ties to femininity, as it’s a craft that’s followed the women in my family for generations. for decades, quilting has been regarded as “women’s work” and was viewed as a nonsensical hobby for women to pursue. alternatively, metal working and sculpture is often viewed as “men’s work” and is a heavily male-dominated field.

not only was my sculpture professor a woman, but 85% of my classmates were women. my goal was to challenge our society’s view of women’s capabilities in unconventional fields. what better way to do that than with a medium so near and dear to my heart? this project was SO much fun, and challenged me in ways that i didn’t even think were possible. stay tuned for more quilting endeavors next semester, but this is a wrap on sculpture!
