I say this as a man: it’s men. ALL men need to hold other men accountable. From calling out the inappropriate and disgusting actions of our peers regardless of how uncomfortable it may make things, to raising younger generations of men in a way that clearly outlines what is and isn’t consent, and makes it abundantly clear that sexual violence is a crime, that is inexcusable, and that should not go unpunished. Period. The fact that 57 men could sit in a group chat and do absolutely nothing while a woman is drugged, tortured, and raped is abhorrent. The fact that @cornelluniversity allowed this to go largely unpunished and refused to even acknowledge its responsibility is infuriating. Even more so, doubling down and claiming that they adequately punished these men is indicative of just how rampant this issue is within our institutions, whether on college campuses or, I don’t know, the White House. Just like the men involved, Cornell thought it could get away with sweeping this under the rug to avoid the bad PR. Men love to claim they’re “protectors,” but often just want power and control. If your ability to protect doesn’t extend beyond your comfort zone, and your willingness to stand up to your peers is limited to what will keep you accepted by a group, the person you are protecting is yourself and the perpetrator of violence against women. Your silence is complicity. As a father raising a son, it’s my goal to raise him to be a genuinely good man. That means raising him to: Understand what consent is and how to respect someone’s boundaries. Call out and stand up to his peers when they are being unkind or not respecting someone else’s boundaries. Know that strength is not meant for dominance. That integrity means doing what’s right even if it costs you something. I want to raise a man with a soft heart, an unwavering moral compass, and the strength to respect, protect, and intervene when others don’t.
