Throwback Thursday-40 years ago 1985 Lexington holiday tournament Mustangs with a big team win great game by all my teammates and a great coaching job by COACH ZICK. I had a pretty good game, but I had no idea that I had 40 points. This would’ve never happened without my teammates. I remember when I was getting ready to get subbed for game was about over my teammate who checked in for me come up to me and said do you know you had 40 points -yeah right - l replied well he wasn’t kidding. I had no idea. I was more worried about winning the ball game then scoring - 40 points 17-23 from the field that’s 73% 6-10 from the free-throw line and grab 12 rebounds - my goal. My senior year was to have a double double average at the end of the season because that was my job to help our team win. before the season started, COACH told me what I needed to work on to be better at and he always had a game plan. He told me what to expect in every game and who I was playing against and just told me to go out and do it that’s what I tried to do. COACH ZICK is in the Illinois basketball coaches Hall of Fame. He helped me become a better player competitor and I learned a lot about the game of basketball- today. I use the same Russ ZICK knowledge in try and pass it on to my son‘s and the young man who I am helping coach right now at the school they kinda look at me sometimes and wonder what the heck I’m saying or talking about, but I say just trust the process and it’ll all be fine -thanks Coach and thanks to my Mustang teammates 40 years ago doesn’t seem that long ago oh yeah, I talked to a friend of mine is from Lexington a few years back and we were talking about that game because he played for Lexington at the time and he said Phil that record is still stands today. The tournament has been discontinued, but that was still the single game scoring record for that tournament - I’m playing a lil DOKKEN- my favorite group in high school - TURN ON THE ACTION- that’s what I tried to do every night when I stepped on the basketball court and kick some ass- lol
