🇨🇺🇪🇸 Ernesto Lecuona – Malagueña, Suite Andalucía Lucas Imbiriba – arrangement and guitar 🎸 • A skater won Olympic gold to the sound of Malagueña: Kristi Yamaguchi used it in the program that earned her the medal, in 1992. Before the ice, Lecuona himself added Spanish lyrics to the piece, and it also began to live as a song. He recorded it himself at the piano on the album Lecuona Plays Lecuona. Singer Connie Francis recorded an English version, with lyrics by Marian Banks, as the B-side of a hit of hers that topped the charts, and guitarist Sabicas adapted it for flamenco guitar. The piece also became tied to the marching bands of the universities of Massachusetts and Minnesota. • Listen again and notice the start: there is a moment of silence, and the guitar comes in all at once, already full, with lows and highs sounding together, as loud as the strummed chords that come later. • Lucas Imbiriba is from Pará and started on guitar as a boy, at the Carlos Gomes Conservatory. He later studied in Barcelona, at the Catalonia College of Music, and took his master's at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, degrees the Federal University of Pará recognized. He also played rock with the band Lucas Cesar Expedition and says the album Change of Plans, which mixed rock with classical music, flamenco and Brazilian rhythms, was the call to return to Brazil. YouTube audiences came for his versions of Stairway to Heaven and Hotel California, and this video has passed 19 million views, according to the platform. During the strummed chords near the end of the clip, his right hand sweeps the strings and appears blurred, with his head thrown back. • 👉 Follow for the best of classical music daily on your feed. • #malaguena #lecuona #lucasimbiriba #classicalmusic

A federal immigration officer shot and injured a man in New York City on Thursday while making an arrest, sparking protests and angering local politicians, who called for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to leave the city. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said officers surrounded the man while he was in a car with a 5-year-old child and then fired. The child wasn’t harmed and the man survived, he said. The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. in the Marble Hill neighborhood of northern Manhattan, according to the New York Police Department. The 28-year-old man was struck in the neck below his left ear and taken to a hospital, said Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. At least one immigration officer fired seven rounds, Tisch said. The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, said the incident happened during a targeted operation to arrest an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, describing him as a “criminal illegal alien.” DHS didn’t offer additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Read more at the link in our bio.
