Visiting the Dohány Street Synagogue in Budapest with @tom_bernthal was deeply meaningful. Opened in 1859, it is Europe’s largest synagogue and a place of profound significance in Jewish history. During the Holocaust, the synagogue complex became part of the Budapest ghetto, where thousands of Jews died from starvation, cold, and violence. More than 2,000 victims were buried in its courtyard, including 1,170 who were never identified. Seeing the names of those buried here, and remembering those whose names we do not know, was devastating. Each was a person with a family, a story, whose future was taken from them. Tom and I also visited the Tree of Life memorial on the synagogue’s grounds. Shaped like a weeping willow, its metal leaves bear the names of Holocaust victims, preserving their memory for generations to come. What stayed with me was that this sacred place continues to hold both remembrance and Jewish life. Today, people still gather here to pray and find community. I left feeling grateful to those who preserve its history and deeply aware of our responsibility to carry these stories forward, honor those we lost, and stand against antisemitism.
