13 moms, 8 butterfly clips, 5 pizza pies, 1 party bus back to the 90s/00s! 🎉 We may not have known each other 30+ years ago but we gladly traveled back in time together last night. When life didn’t feel so heavy.

Should Alexander McQueen have closed after Lee McQueen’s death in 2010?

The final slide contains the full interview clip in which McQueen discusses what he would do if he ever left his own fashion house.

The question has returned following Seán McGirr’s departure, with Kering preparing to appoint the third creative director in the house’s history. Each appointment raises questions about how much of McQueen’s work can continue under another designer, particularly when so much of the original collections came from his personal experiences, interests and relationships.

McQueen himself made conflicting statements about the future of his company. In a 2006 interview, he famously threatened to burn the house down if he ever left. However, he later expressed a desire for the company to survive him. The distinction between leaving a business and what should happen after his death is significant.

Sarah Burton, who worked alongside McQueen for years, offered one answer. She continued the house’s tailoring, elaborate construction and atelier work while developing a successful business. By 2022, annual sales were estimated at €830 million.

McGirr’s appointment in 2023 introduced a different interpretation of the archive. His departure now leaves Kering facing another decision about the house’s future.

Should Alexander McQueen remain an active fashion house under successive designers, or would its founder’s work be better preserved through an archive, exhibitions and historical collections?
